What do Power Bars, a “real” Wine Bar and Cap’n Crunch have in common ???

West Street Wine Bar
148 West St. - Reno
775-336-3560
Last week Wineosaurus adventured into the newly renovating West Street Market core of downtown Reno and a gem of a Wine Bar (not a sales store the serves wine but a real Wine Bar that also sells wine) and had the pleasure of meeting and tasting with Rick Martinez and Samantha Reveley of West Street Wine Bar. Their format has over 50 wines by the glass and more by the bottle, served as 2.5 oz tastes or 6.0 oz glass or a bottle. The by the glass wines are fresh and kept that way by the “La Verre de Vin” wine preservation system technology. In addition they have Tasting Flights or you can create your own Flight by picking any three wines and the sum of the three taste prices is your cost. Food is available from the surrounding establishments.

West Street Wine Bar is promoting a Meet the Winemaker Event

With C. G. Di Arie Vineyard & Winery and it’s Winemaker Chaim Gur-Arieh. The winery is a 12,000sq.ft "World Class" facility in Amador County, California.

As a Ph.D. food scientist, C.G. Di Arie proprietor and winemaker Chaim Gur-Arieh spent over forty years in the food industry, developing products such as Capn’ Crunch, Power Bar, Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing and “pudding cups” before founding the C.G. Di Arie Winery. In 2000, Chaim and his wife Elisheva purchased a 209 acre estate in California’s Shenandoah Valley in the Sierra Foothills. Subsequently, they built a world-class winery, planted 20 acres of estate vineyards on the property and established relationships with the finestgrape growers in the region.
In his new role as Winemaker, Chaim has also developed a new technology of fermentation. He patented his newly designed “C. G. Di Arie Submerged Cap Fermentation Tank” that uses cutting edge technology to submerge the cap during the entire fermentation process, much like a “French Press” in coffee making. This approach to winemaking is “out of the box” and has resulted in creating a highly extracted, yet soft and elegant award winning wines and creating wines with robust fruit, soft tannins, elegance, balance and complexity.

less expensive !, tastes great !, wine with high Quality to Price Ratio in these Interesting Times…

Last week I participated in a Holiday Wrapping Party @ Montebello at Summit Ridge with Community Managers Deborah Langdon, Kristi Kenney and staff and as a Wineosaurus often does assisted in pouring the wine. Of the selection of wines several stood out as quality wines and were a re-introduction into the world of less expensive with with excellent quality. This having a great Quality to Price Ratio (QPR) is not a new measurement however it is, in this day and age, an unexpected pleasure to find in the $10 and under range.

The wines were Bears’ Lair Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and Black Mountain Syrah from Napa and. Sonoma. They are part the Bronco Wine Co. family and are available at Trader Joe’s

They were extremely well received and tasted at many times their perceived price value. The Merlot had veriatel characteristics as well as good fruit and pleasant finish. The Cabernet and Syrah were equally as drinkable and enjoyable.

In addition to “discovering” less expensive wines at the wrapping party a good time was had by all present and the donations to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada were greatly appreciated.

Drink what you like… are you ready for “Rough And Ready Red” Wine ??? Have Happy Holidays

Our winery of the season is a small Sierra foothills gem in Nevada City, CA; appropriately named Nevada City Winery

But first I am exercising my prerogative as the blogger to interrupt this weblog and vent a little about the vagaries of the season and expectations.

The first part of the seasonal insanity has passed us by and we’ve settled down.
I must confess I, too, got caught up again. You ask in what? Not election politics nor the economy; but the brainwashed dogma that certain wine need go with certain foods. That wine parings with food must follow RULES.

The truth is, there are no RULES,
just something someone said then others followed along like sheeple.
Maybe they felt sophisticated or educated or snobbish knowing which wine matches and complements ham, turkey, roast beef, or lamb.
Primarily when you are pairing wines with a meal, find one or more you enjoy drinking. Then savor each sip and bite of your holiday feast.

Wine pairing is an overall sensory experience. It ranges from the taste wine and food provoke in your mouth to the aromas that fill the room when you open the wine and serve the meal. Don’t worry about the quality of a wine or how it was rated in the most recent wine magazines. You should be the one to enjoy drinking the wine. Regardless of what wine experts claim to be the best vintages, .

When you find a wine you take pleasure in, save the cork or write down what is on the label so you can repeat the experience..

If the truth be known, this is how many wine sophisticates find their most precious vintages.

For a group experience at the holiday table open a few wines, both whites and reds, let the group tell you which they like. Compare all of your experiences and write the best ones down so you may enjoy them again. Make a note of who liked what for a later gift or another time you enjoy wine and food with that particular friend.

Tasting new wines and food combinations with friends is the real shared experience. The emphasis is on the people and the wine. This is the reason for getting together in the first place.

Now to the Winery of the season, a small Sierra foothills gem in Nevada City, CA, appropriately named Nevada City Winery. It is located in the historic Miners Foundry Garage on Spring Street in downtown Nevada City. This location is less than two blocks from where the original winery stood over a century ago.

Nevada City Winery makes over 20 wines with 16 of them having won distinction, medals and honors to attest to their desirability and recognition. The breakdown of the wines is 4 Whites, 2 Blush and 15 red varietals and blends.

With the previous suggestion in mind, you could pick a few whites and reds from just this winery and have a great experience on the coming holiday.

In the local area some of these wines are in a tasting on Wednesday, December 10th A Holiday Kick Off Wine Pairing at Butcher Boy Prime 5:30-8:00

Some of the wines I have tasted and enjoyed from Nevada City Winery are:

One of Consumer Reports top three rated Pinot Noirs to go with your Turkey ???

ARTESA WINES PINOT NOIR CARNEROS 2006

In the December issue of Consumer Reports this delightful wine was selected in their top three Pinot Noirs.

We heartily agree and find this wine to be a bright pinot noir filled with aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry and red currant. This wine is beautifully subtle and multi-layered with hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, leather, cedar chest, vanilla and a gossamer of California Bay Tree. Wonderful!

Since this wine is the perfect selection for holiday entertaining, we have purchased a large amount and will pass the savings on to you! Special Pricing. Limited to stock on hand.

‘tis the season of demons, witches and Skulls and a wine of the same name…

River of Skulls from Twisted Oak Winery is our paean to the celebration of Halloween, also known as All Hallows Eve or the day preceding “All Souls Day, All Saints Day and Los Dias de los Muertos” in recollection and remembrance for the dead. The second most celebrated “holiday” after Christmas.

River of Skulls has an intriguing story referencing the local history of the region where the grapes are grown.

“In 1805, Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga was ordered by the Spanish Governor of California to explore the Great Central Valley. Displace the local Natives, and re-name everything he found.
Well, one day Gabe and his horsemen came across a river the banks of which were littered with skulls. No one knows for sure how the skulls came to be on the banks of this river.
Perhaps they were the remains of an ancient battle, or a terrible plague. Or perhaps it was a really great party that suddenly went horribly wrong. Whatever the case old Gabe, being a true master of the obvious, named this river “El Rio De Las Calaveras” or in English, “The River of Skulls.”

River of Skulls is a dark ruby colored wine - darker than blood.
Bold and concentrated cherry and blackberry on the palate with pepper and sweet oak. It has a long finish with moderately firm tannins.

This single-vineyard 2006 vintage wine from Calavares County is a blend of 10% Syrah and 90% Mourvedre, in reality a Spanish clone of Mourvèdre (called Monastrell in Spain), it is actually a native of Spain, probably Catalonia, and is more known in the wine world as one of the 13 grapes of the Côtes du Rhône,

This is definitely the Treat in “trick or treat”.
